It has been an unforgettable experience for the whole family to visit the Vatican. It is actually a tiny sovereign state covering only about 100 acres but its holy buildings are monumental and its insides contain the world’s greatest art masterpieces.
It was actually our last stop in Italy after visiting Venice, Florence, Pisa and Milan. Stepping into St. Peter’s Square was exhilarating and all those Doric columns around seemed to be the Lord’s arms embracing us.
We decided to go to the Vatican museum first and went to see the Sistine Chapel. The celebrated artworks of Michelangelo and Giudizio Univerale were awesome and our eyes were all glued on the ceiling frescoes..
We walked next to St. Peter’s Basilica. The size, grandeur and opulence of the Basilica’s interior were so breathtaking and amazing. Regardless where you look at, there will be master pieces to behold. And one can not miss Michelangelo’s La Pieta at the entrance and it just makes you a little sad looking at the sculpture of Madonna cradling her lost Son.
We thought we can have a glimpse of the Pope but there was no scheduled mass in the square. We tried going up to the basilica dome but it was restricted this time in 1997. During our first visit in 1989, Becky and I actually were able to climb up to the top via a creaking elevator and more than 300 steps up. It was really tiring to climb up but the reward was a breath taking panoramic view of Rome.
