THE MILIEU, THE PLAYWRIGHT AND HIS WORK

There is arguably no more outstanding figure in Philippine playwriting today than Bienvenido M. Noriega Jr. This conclusion is suggested not only by the record number of major literary awards Noriega has won for his drama, but also and more importantly by the frequency with which the plays have been produced and the generally positive reception that has met their presentation. These , for the dramatist, provide the true test and reward of the craft, and Noriega has been both well tested and amply rewarded.

At the age of 32, Noriega has had no less than 17 literary prizes to his name, all of them in the writing of the one-act play and the full length play in Pilipino. He has also done a number of short television plays. A full length screenplay, also awarded and recently produced and two selections in book form of his plays. Nearly all of the 20 plays or so he has written within the past 10 years, by this accounting , have been recognized by either a Palanca or a Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) award and by subsequent production. This is an unparalleled feat in Philippine writing – in Pilipino or in English.
