St. Petersburg, Russia

Updated: Dec 19, 2019

There are so many things to see and do in St. Petersburg, yet so little time to get a feel of this wonderful culture. But here we are amidst the mist, and the fine rain that drizzled and we couldn’t care less. This place is beautiful, clean and the few people we met are just nice and un-intimidating. This was not what we expected in coming to Russia. We must have watched a lot of old Russian movies that our expectations turned around during our brief stay, about this country. Inside the immigration, we were greeted by young, nice and smiling men and women that made us feel comfortable and welcomed and that was enough.

We joined the 3 ½ hours tour of the Heritage Museum. What better way to sink into the Russian history and culture, the shorter route. Along the way, our tour guide gave us bits of information about St. Petersburg and the great man that created it, Peter, the Great. Its history is fascinating and the museum collection that we saw and admired is something that we will not forget. The collection was awesome and our eyes feasted on the great men that shaped art in this world. I was awed by being able to get so near the paintings of the masters that I like especially recognizing those that inspired me to express myself through my own art-Van Gogh, Gauigin, Cessane, Mattise, and Dega and actually get photos taken (w/o flash-of course). Just like the Louvre collection in Paris, these masters’ collections are a sight to behold. The paintings, murals and frescoes depicting stories from the bible are just beautiful. I myself cannot forget the beauty of the various depictions of the “Madonna and Child” done by Da Vinci.

It was 11:25 in the evening before going to bed that yes-the intriguing mood of the famous “white nights” was awesome. St. Petersburg’s Neva River and vicinity reminds me of beautiful Luzern in Switzerland and the ambience of Amsterdam’s canals in the Netherlands.
