Sometimes people take for granted how much of a privilege living in a beautiful and wonderful place like Canada. We will never lose being Pinoy but we are forever thankful being here especially when “unfortunately” you have to avail of its universal health care services. We have the unique perspective of seeing how the health care works amidst a multicultural tapestry of caregivers and patients. We were exceptionally relieved as soon as we got into emergency. Within 30 minutes, she was already being looked up to - blood works, ECG , vital signs, scans etc. And within hours, Becky had already undergone a procedure to treat a serious infection in her abdomen. We have been at the Kelowna General hospital for the past eight days and she is now on her road to recovery although we may still have to stay here for the next 2 days. As “bantay”, I have personally seen and experienced how caring the doctors, nurses and staff are. Their smiles and kind words certainly brought comfort to us. The area and facilities are cleaned and maintained well. Even visitors are comfortable with huge waiting areas, bistro, cafeteria, gift shop etc inside the building. More so, there is a kitchen area near the patients’ room where you can avail of water, coffee, tea , crackers and even ginger ale not to mention oven, toaster, ref with yogurt etc. Likewise, there are always clean linens in the corridor and a warm blanket in a heater oven. This is perhaps the time when one actually appreciates paying taxes as you know how well they are spent. How can you not be grateful getting superb medical attention without paying anything? We may want to go home now but we will always find comfort in the overflowing kindness and gentleness we are experiencing in this hospital.
