It was a beautiful Friday, no rain, warm but breezy. The suite given to us was very comfortable and spacious with its own bathroom, sofa, balcony and two TVs. The local temperature was around 23'C. After breakfast, we headed to our bus that will take us to a full day tour of Veliko Tărnovo and Arbanasi in Russe Bulgaria. These are 2 "cultural gems" that showcase Bulgarian heritage.
The drive through Russe gave us a glimpse of the city. Russe setting is idyllic with a rolling countryside in green. It is often called the "little Vienna or Bulgaria's Jerusalem
Veliko Tărnovo is medieval town built around Tsarevets Hill. The royal castle sits at the hilltop in all its Serene magnificence. Arbanasi is a quaint little town and boasts of a Greek influence in all its structures. Lunch was at a local restaurant with traditional Bulgarian food. We sampled the Damascus Rose products, locally made from rose oil which is an essential ingredient for cosmetiques and anti-aging products then visited a local merchant house. The visit to the Nativity Church was calming after a long walk amidst the afternoon sun. The domed insides of the church, now a museum depicted in frescoes the wheel of life, including episodes in the life of Christ. The rooms were dark and cool and the wooden seats all around provided respite from tired legs and aching knees.
Before going back to the long ship, the bus brought us up the hill and by the foot of the fortress had opportunity to take pictures. It was along day, but all worth it. It was time to relax and enjoy the river view as we sail to next destination, the port of Vidin also in Bulgaria.
