We were early birds today. We had to wake up at 5 am despite a late night. Our assembly time for our excursion "Bruges on your own" was at 7:15 am while our other brothers and sisters who took another excursion "Brussels" was at 7:45 am. We had to forego that as we have been to Brussels twice in the past. Bruges, however was likewise a good choice although really physically demanding as literally we were on our own. We actually disembarked in Rotterdam, Netherlands and took a 2-1/2 hour drive to Bruges, Belgium Nowhere in Netherlands do they have a town that preserved its medieval look. The town square is dominated by 15th to 17th century houses and magnificent buildings reminiscent of the Middle Ages, flowering with gothic architecture and dominated by halls and belfries. The Church of our Lady is the tallest in town where the world famous marble statue of Madonna and Child by Michelangelo sits inside. We learned as well that French fries are really Belgium fries introduced to the Americans during world war 2 but since the Belgians were French speaking, the Americans incorrectly called the fried potatoes as French fries. It was really physically exhausting to explore the town on foot. We were refreshed however with delicious Belgian waffle and hot chocolate. We got back to the ship by 5 pm and after a much needed rest, we treated ourselves with an evening of Italian opera. Second seating dinner came next and another night of carefree dancing.
