Today, we hit the road again more as a prelude to the real Safari this weekend. The Panorama Drive was long, winding, and because it was raining....was hazy and the mist covered the supposedly breathtaking view of the African countryside. The absence of a public transportation in the countryside in view of a small population forces the locals to hitchhike and we have seen a lot of them along the road.
We requested for a short stop at a local souvenir shop to find my dear Braeden's wooden safari toys and buy some table runners. And after completing my most important mission, we proceeded to an elephants' sanctuary called Elephant Whispers. Seven elephants put up a show for the group and later allowed us to feed and touch them. It would have been nice to ride on them but it was raining and very slippery so we decided to forego that to avoid any injuries. We just contented ourselves to make a video for apo Braeden with the largest among them named Midwa. He weighs 2 tons and is 23 years old and expected to live up to 65 years old.
Lunch was at the local Harties restaurant that was abuzzed with hungry tourists. The next stop was at the Lisbon waterfalls, beautiful rock formation and water raging just like a mini Niagara Falls. We also passed by God's Window along the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. It is described as one of the most magnificent sites in South Africa, truly spectacular and scenic but due to the rains and mist hid its grandiose beauty. With tired and aching bodies we settled to stay in the vehicle in the next stop, the Bourke's Luck. The story is that gold was found in potholes created by two great rivers so called "Sad and Happy"meeting together. The last stop along the panoramic route was the Three Rondavels, a rock formation shaped like three african beehive huts. Heavy mist however prevented us to see clearly the rock formation. It was a full tiring day and we were both exhausted from the ride back to Dunkeld for dinner. We are looking forward tomorrow to the trip to Humala River and the Songevelo Reserve for the morning Safari.
