Butch and Becky

Barkada

This was a short play written by playwright Bienvenido M. Noriega, Jr. It won second prize in the One-Act play category. This was actually the third Palanca award he won in the same year in 1981. Winning a single Palanca Literature prize is a feat in itself but winning 3 Palanca awards in the same year and doing so while competing against the best writers in the country was truly amazing. And he was not even a full time writer as he had a day job as Executive Vice President of the Philippine National Bank.

National Artist nominee, Jose Dalisay in his thesis wrote: “ Again, Noriega makes fun of fun in this comedy of spinsters: here the old maids play a joke on the one of them about to be married.”

The play was staged by Dulaang UP at the Wilfrido Guerrero Theatre during its sixth season with Bibeth Orteza, heading the cast. It was directed by Anton Juan Jr.
