Playwright Bienvenido M. Noriega, Jr. wrote another Palanca prize winning play –“Artista sa Palengke” , one of his many award winning plays in the 70s and 80s. PETA staged the play at Rajah Sulayman Theater in Fort Santiago in 1977 with veteran actress Alicia Alonzo and Michael Sandiko heading the cast. It was directed by renowned director, Maryo de los Reyes.
Butch Dalisay, a National Artist in the making wrote in his thesis that “Artista stands out in Noriega’s drama as in his own terms, his most deliberately plotted” play. It is a whodunit: the toughie- lord of the market place is mysteriously murdered; in the resultant publicity, his young son gains for himself a career in the movies; thus good emerges out of evil.
The play is remarkable not only for its unusual (for Noriega) intricacy of plot but likewise for its use – perhaps in keeping with the world of the play – of the so called “cinematic” or cut to cut technique involving short scenes.”
